How to Dispute Inaccurate Late Payments on Your Credit Report

Important: Only dispute late payments that are factually inaccurate. Disputing accurate information is not appropriate and will not result in removal. Accurate late payments can report for 7 years from the date of first delinquency. This is educational information, not legal advice.

When You Can (and Can't) Dispute a Late Payment

    Legitimate Reasons for Dispute

    Payment Was Never Late

You have proof the payment was made on time but is incorrectly reported as late.

    Wrong Date Reported

The late payment shows for the wrong month or year.

    Account Not Yours

The account with the late payment doesn't belong to you (identity error or mixed file).

Paid On Time But Posted Late

You paid by the due date but the creditor's processing delay caused it to post late.

    What's NOT a Valid Dispute

    • The payment was actually late, even if there were extenuating circumstances
    • You forgot to make the payment
    • You couldn't afford the payment at the time
    • You don't like having the late payment on your report
    • The creditor wouldn't work with you on payment arrangements

    Goodwill Adjustments vs. Disputes

    What Is a Goodwill Letter?

A goodwill letter is a request to a creditor asking them to remove an accurate negative item as a courtesy. Unlike a dispute, you're not claiming the information is wrong—you're asking for leniency.

    When to Use Goodwill Approach

    • The late payment was accurate but you've been a good customer since
    • There were extenuating circumstances (medical emergency, job loss)
    • It was your first and only late payment with this creditor
    • You've since paid off or maintained good standing on the account

    Realistic Expectations

Goodwill adjustments are entirely at the creditor's discretion. They are not required to grant them. Success rates are low, but some creditors do make exceptions for long-standing customers with otherwise good history.

    Gathering Evidence for Your Dispute

    Payment Confirmation Records

Confirmation emails, receipts, or screenshots showing when you submitted payment.

    Bank Statements

Statements showing when the payment cleared your account and the transaction date.

    Correspondence with Creditor

Emails, letters, or chat logs discussing the payment or any disputes.

    Timeline Documentation

A clear timeline showing payment due date, when you paid, and when it posted.

    Step-by-Step Dispute Process

    1

    Review Your Credit Report Details

Get your credit report and note the exact details of the late payment: which month, creditor name, account number, and how it's categorized (30, 60, 90 days late).

    2

    Contact Original Creditor First (Optional)

Sometimes contacting the creditor directly can resolve the issue faster. They can correct reporting at the source.

    3

    Submit Bureau Dispute

File a dispute with each credit bureau reporting the inaccurate late payment. Include your evidence and a clear explanation.

    4

    Track Investigation

Monitor the 30-day investigation period. The bureau will contact the creditor and report back with results.

    What to Expect

    Investigation Timeline

Credit bureaus have 30 days to investigate (45 days if you provide additional information). You'll receive written results after the investigation completes.

    Possible Outcomes

    • Deleted: The late payment is removed from your report
    • Modified: The information is corrected (e.g., wrong date fixed)
    • Verified: The creditor confirms the late payment is accurate

    If Verified as Accurate

If the bureau verifies the late payment but you still believe it's wrong, you can request the "method of verification," dispute directly with the furnisher, or file a CFPB complaint.

Impact of Late Payments on Credit

    30/60/90/120 Day Lates

    30 days lateModerate impact
    60 days lateMore serious impact
    90 days lateSignificant damage
120+ days lateSevere impact, may charge-off

How Long They Stay on Report

Late payments remain on your credit report for 7 years from the date of the original delinquency.

    Score Impact Over Time

The impact of a late payment decreases over time. A late payment from 5 years ago affects your score much less than one from last month. Maintaining good payment history going forward is the best way to recover.
