Mock OSHA inspections are a powerful tool for identifying compliance gaps before they become citations. But to be effective, they must simulate actual inspection conditions as closely as possible.

The opening conference sets expectations. In a real inspection, OSHA presents credentials, explains the purpose, and requests records. Your mock inspection should follow the same format, including document requests that test your retrieval capabilities.

The walkaround is the heart of the inspection. Inspectors observe work practices, examine equipment, and interview employees. Your mock inspection should cover multiple work areas, include employee conversations, and document findings with the same rigor an inspector would apply.

Focus on the 'fatal four' in construction (falls, struck-by, caught-in/between, electrocution) and the most frequently cited standards in your industry. These are where inspectors concentrate attention and where violations are most likely.

The closing conference presents findings and discusses next steps. Use this opportunity in your mock inspection to prioritize corrective actions and assign accountability. Document everything as you would for an actual inspection.
