Project delays happen despite the best planning. When they do, recovery scheduling becomes critical. The goal is to identify viable paths back to the original completion date—or at least minimize further delay.
Start with an honest assessment of the current situation. What is the actual critical path? How much delay has occurred? What are the root causes? Recovery strategies must address real problems, not just paper over symptoms.
Acceleration options include adding resources, extending work hours, and working weekends. Each comes with costs and risks. Productivity often decreases as crew sizes increase, and extended hours can lead to fatigue and safety issues. Calculate the true cost of acceleration before committing.
Re-sequencing can sometimes recover time without acceleration costs. Look for activities that can be performed in parallel rather than series, or where the logical sequence can be modified without quality impacts. This requires close coordination with trade contractors.
Whatever recovery approach is selected, the schedule must be re-baselined to reflect reality. Continuing to measure against the original baseline obscures progress and makes future forecasting unreliable. Document the recovery plan and track performance against the new targets.
